Barcelona chose to sign Raphinha instead of Manchester United forward Antony during the recent transfer window

Manchester United forward Antony was a player Barcelona had the chance to snap up from Ajax this summer ahead of his move to Old Trafford. However, the La Liga giants chose instead to sign Raphinha from Leeds United, according to Sport via CaughtOffside (h/t Manchester Evening News).

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez was of the opinion that from the two Brazilians, Raphinha would better suit his system. The Spaniard considered the former Leeds forward a more complete player and felt that the 25-year-old had a better work rate.

In the end, the Blaugrana decided against getting Antony. Eventually, after dragged out negotiations, Man United were able to capture the 22-year-old’s signature.

The Red Devils were seemingly in need of attacking reinforcements this summer. Edinson Cavani left the club at the culmination of his contract last season. Cristiano Ronaldo was also apparently looking for a move away from Manchester.

Man United fans did not have faith in Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho. The English duo were coming off a disappointing 2021/22 campaign. However, the two have shined this season under Erik ten Hag.

Anthony Martial left the club in January in the previous campaign after not getting a lot of opportunities at Man United. The France international spent a short spell at Sevilla.

When most of our other attacking options failed to make an impact last season, Anthony Elanga was the one who stepped up. The young Swede brought energy up front. And the 20-year-old has continued in the same vein under the new manager, albeit getting minutes has been challenging.

Man United also boast a bunch of talented prospects. Alejandro Garnacho and Charlie McNeill have both been given an opportunity to get on the pitch under Ten Hag.

Barcelona’s loss is our gain. Antony has reunited with his former Ajax coach and has started his career in Manchester on the front foot. The Brazilian was oozing with passion as he scored on his debut against Arsenal.
