Matej Kovar joins Czech club Sparta Prague on season-long loan from Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar has joined Sparta Prague on a season-long loan, according to Manchester Evening News. The 22-year-old goalkeeper agreed to a new contract until 2025 before his move to the Czech Republic.

Kovar joined the Red Devils’ academy in 2018 from FC Slovacko back in his home country. The Czech Republic U21has not featured for the senior side yet, mostly playing his football with the reserve team.

The shot-stopper has also had spells out on loan at Swindon Town and Burton. Kovar was set for a move to Cheltenham Town in League One this summer. However, the 22-year-old was not allowed to move as the Red Devils were looking for a backup goalkeeper.

Dean Henderson left the club in the transfer window. The 25-year-old joined Nottingham Forest on loan from United. And the Red Devils were left with David de Gea and Tom Heaton to choose from in between the sticks.

Kovar down the pecking order

Kovar accompanied the side during pre-season. He was also recently on the bench against Leicester City. However, United managed to get Martin Dubravka from Newcastle United on deadline day.

Currently, the number one in goal for the Red Devils is Spaniard De Gea. The 31-year-old has had a resurgence of form over the last year. And Ten Hag has seemingly decided to trust the former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper.

De Gea evidently found it difficult initially. The new gaffer has brought with him new ideas. And one of the aspects Ten Hag apparently wants the team to implement is playing from out the back.

However, our current number one is not the best with the ball at his feet. The Spaniard’s distribution leaves a lot to be desired. And he has struggled with it, as was apparent during the Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford fixtures.

Kovar is still young and has a lot to learn but at 22, it is important for him to get playing time on a regular basis. It remains to be seen whether the Czech national is able to make a mark in Manchester in the coming future.
