Ajax blocked Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag from signing Brian Brobbey this summer

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was blocked by Ajax from signing Brian Brobbey during the transfer window. The Dutch manager did have a conversation with the 20-year-old. However, the Eredivisie champions were not keen on it.

United signed two players from Ajax before the summer deadline. Lisandro Marinez arrived early, while the Antony deal seemingly took a bit of time to get over the line.

Ten Hag was interested in a third player from the Dutch outfit. And transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside (h/t The Sun) has revealed that the Dutch manager made a single approach for Brobbey. In the end, Ajax scuppered the possibility of any move.

“Brian Brobbey has opened up about an approach from Ten Hag, and he’s made it clear in an interview with ESPN that he would love to play for United, but what really went on with these talks?

“There was only one approach between Ten Hag and Brobbey but the player was already blocked by Ajax, it was never a concrete negotiation.”

United were evidently looking to bolster their attack during the transfer window. Edinson Cavani left the club at the end of his contract last season. And during the summer, Cristiano Ronaldo was apparently angling for a move away from Manchester.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner arrived last year to huge fanfare. He ended the previous campaign as our top goalscorer. United relied on the Portuguese to deliver in the final third of the pitch.

Our other forwards did not live up to the mark in the 2021/22 season. Marcus Rashford seemed a shadow of himself whenever he was given an opportunity.

Jadon Sancho arrived to the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2021 after tearing it apart in the Bundesliga. However, the former Borussia Dortmund star failed to replicate his form in England.

Anthony Martial failed to get a lot of minutes under his belt during the previous campaign. The France international left for Sevilla in January on loan.

However, currently, the Red Devils are flying high in the Premier League after four consecutive wins. Our attack has looked sharp. We have decent substitutes to call upon from the bench. It remains to be seen whether Brobbey is someone United will go after once again in the future.
