Erik ten Hag called up Charlie McNeill and two other academy youngsters to train with senior Manchester United squad
Manchester United academy prodigy Charlie McNeill was called up by Erik ten Hag to train with the senior squad ahead of the Red Devils’ fixture against Real Sociedad.
The 18-year-old was joined by fellow academy defender Tyler Fredricson and midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. The trio from the youth side joined the first-team training, according to The Mirror.
McNeill joined United’s academy from rivals Manchester City in 2020. In youth football, the 18-year-old has scored over 600 goals. For the Red Devils’ U21 side, the youngster has a decent record as well.
During pre-season, fans got to witness a bunch of prospects. In the friendlies, Zidane Iqbal was arguably the youngster who caught the eye the most. Charlie Savage also put in a decent shift.
However, the Iraqi national looked good on the ball. The midfielder showed glimpses of his abilities in the friendly against Liverpool in Thailand. He was subsequently afforded more minutes during pre-season.
Other young talents who are on United’s books include Hannibal Mejbri, Facundo Pellistri and Alvaro Fernandez, amongst others. Alejandro Garnacho is another prodigy who has been able to establish himself in the first-team squad.
United commence their Europa League campaign with Los Txuri-Urdin visiting Old Trafford. The Red Devils have been on a winning streak in the Premier League. A victory over Sociedad would make it five in a row in all competitions.
Academy product Marcus Rashford has been key in the side’s run. Having struggled for form last season, the England international seems to have found his feet under the new manager.

United’s academy has produced quality players over the years. It remains to be seen whether McNeill is able to replicate his abilities at a much higher level in the coming future.
