Manchester United starlet Tahith Chong makes permanent switch to Birmingham City
According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, talented Manchester United academy graduate Tahith Chong has made the permanent switch to Championship club Birmingham City on deadline day.
The once very highly-rated Dutch winger spent last season out on loan at Birmingham. He has now made the move permanent. A player who came through the youth ranks at Carrington, Chong hasn’t really lived up to the hype.
The 22-year-old starlet joined Manchester United back in 2016 from Dutch club Feyenoord. He has made 16 appearances for the Red Devils senior team across all competitions in so many years but has failed to score a single goal.
Having spent quite a few seasons out on loan at different clubs, it looks like Chong has found his home at Birmingham City at least for now. The 22-year-old has played 20 games for the Championship club till now scoring one goal and providing three assists across all competitions.
Speaking to the in-house media upon securing the move to Birmingham City as quoted by Manchester Evening News, Chong admitted that he was excited to be back and what was looking forward to his time there
“I am excited to be back. Especially after last season, I have always felt Birmingham City had been my second home.”
“Everyone at the club, the staff, the players and the fans – everyone made me feel so welcome, a family club. I feel ready to go. I am very excited to get going. It’s great to be back.”
There was a time when Chong was tipped to become a key player in the first team back at Manchester United. He was very highly rated but it’s safe to say that the Dutch winger didn’t really realise his potential at Old Trafford.
Considering the sheer number of young wingers like Facundo Pellistri, Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho coming through at Old Trafford, it is almost impossible that Chong would have gotten any game time had he stayed here.
Chong is just 22 years old and has his entire footballing career in front of him. He can use Birmingham as a stepping stone for bigger adventures that follow. It may not have worked out at Man United but there is no denying that the Dutchman has potential.
