Transfer News: Manchester United have shortlisted four goalkeepers as a back-up for David de Gea

According to The Sun, Manchester United have shortlisted three goalkeepers to bring in as back-up for David de Gea as the summer transfer window draws to a close.

Yann Sommer leads the race to be the back-up keeper at Old Trafford this season. Meanwhile Man United have identified two more as options in Tim Krul and Daniel Bachmann.

Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos is the fourth option for the Manchester club, as confirmed by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano via Twitter.

Sommer leads the race, with United scouts present to see him perform in Borussia Monchengladbach’s match against Hertha Berlin. However, the Swiss international is believed to want regular action as he eyes to represent his country in the World Cup in November.

Krul has been important for Norwich City over the years. He has also played with the likes of Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United. The 34-year-old is one experienced keeper and would serve as a very good backup to De Gea.

Watford goalkeeper Bachmann is also an option. The 28-year-old has played in the top-flight and could be an excellent choice for number two. Vlachodimos is a regular for Benfica at the back. The 28-year-old Greece international has huge experience under his belt and could be bought in if the Reds fail to bring in Sommer.

United decided to loan out Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest, as the Englishman became frustrated to be under De Gea’s shadow. The Spaniard has gotten off to a very disappointing start this season, and was even at fault during the game against Brentford.

De Gea is currently the default choice in between the sticks. But given his recent performances, it has become very important for United to bring in another keeper to provide competition to the Spaniard. They have shortlisted a number of such keepers, but it remains to be seen who they can bring in.
