Manchester United consider benching Harry Maguire against Liverpool
According to Manchester Evening News, Man United boss, Erik ten Hag is considering the option of benching club captain Harry Maguire against arch-nemesis Liverpool this weekend in favour of starting Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.
Man United have had a dismal start to the new Premier League season losing both their matches until now and finding themselves languishing at the bottom of the points table. Things do not get easier for them though as they face Liverpool this weekend.
Having suffered humiliating defeats to Brighton and Brentford, the Liverpool clash is extremely crucial for Erik ten Hag and his men. The Red Devils will want to get off the mark but it will definitely not be easy against Liverpool.
Liverpool themselves have not had the best of starts to their season by their own loft standards with the Merseysiders only managing to secure draws against newly promoted Fulham and Crystal Palace in their first couple of games.
Man United’s dismal performances can be attributed to a lot of factors. However, one player who has been getting the stick not just now but for the good part of the past campaign as well is English international Harry Maguire.
The club captain is not highly rated by the Red Devils faithful and there is an opinion that the former Leicester man is not at the levels expected of a Man United player. He, however, seemed to have Erik ten hag’s backing.
Things seem to be changing though with the Dutch tactician realising that pairing the English centre-back with Lisandro Martinez might not be the way to go about things. This means that the former Ajax manager will have to make a choice.
With a player of Raphael Varane’s quality available at his disposal, it was only a matter of time before ten Hag made this call. It seems like the Dutchman is willing to bench Maguire in favour of playing the former Ajax man and Varane.
It’s high time we took the call to drop Maguire. The English international is a decent player on the bench but he is too inconsistent to be a starter at the club. Pairing Lisandro Martinez with Varane seems ideal on paper but the former Ajax man will have to improve his showings from the first two games that he played this season.
