Club News: Diogo Dalot gives his reasons for Manchester United’s defeat

The Erik ten Hag era of Manchester United started in the worst possible way as the Red Devils lost 1-2 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Diogo Dalot, who started the game and played the entire 90 minutes explained what went wrong for his side today. Speaking to MUTV (h/t Manchester Evening News), the Portuguese gave his reasons.

“I think we could stop a little bit more the counterattacks. We let them play freely a couple of times and they play in behind. We could stop those counterattacks with a little bit more aggression. We need to analyse what we did, and what we didn’t do right and try to improve for the next game.”

Cristiano Ronaldo was on the bench as new signing Christian Eriksen started as the striker. Lisandro Martinez also started the game, partnering with Harry Maguire at the back.

Two goals from Pascal Gross put the visitors ahead at half-time. United managed to pull one back in the second through an own goal of Alexis MacAllister, but that was not enough.

Scott McTominay and Fred were below par in the middle of the park. Cristiano came on in the second half but there was little for him to do too. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were way below their pre-season form.

Tyrell Malacia also made his debut as he came on for Luke Shaw at the end of the game. Donny van de Beek made his first appearance for the club in January, coming on as a sub.

The result shows that Ten Hag still has a long way to go. The team was below par and he will know that. It will be wise for him to learn from his mistakes today and improve his team.

Fans will hope that their team improves in training. Another defeat in their next game could hamper any chances of United’s top four finish this season. Ten Hag will hope for better performance when his team travel to face Brentford next Saturday.
