Anthony Martial will miss the opening game of the 2022/23 season for Manchester United against Brighton & Hove Albion because of a minor hamstring injury, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required).

The Frenchman played 69 minutes in Oslo against Atletico Madrid and was replaced by Christian Eriksen in the second half. But the 26-year-old left the pitch holding his leg.

It’s unclear whether Martial will be fit in time to face Brentford. The Red Devils visit the Gtech Community Stadium on 13 August.

It’s a shame that the 26-year-old has to sit on the sidelines. During pre-season, the Frenchman has looked rejuvenated. Under Erik ten Hag, the former AS Monaco forward has looked sharp before the start of the new campaign.

Martial has been on point in the friendlies. The 26-year-old scored in the opening three games against Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace on United’s Asia and Australia tour.

The France international also featured for the Manchester-based club in the draw against Aston Villa. The Atletico game was the only one in which Martial looked slightly off the pace.

This puts Ten Hag’s plans for the opening game of the Premier League campaign up in the air. Cristiano Ronaldo has missed a big chunk of the training sessions under the Dutch manager.

The Portuguese featured for the first time against Rayo Vallecano in our final friendly of the pre-season. But it was evident that the 37-year-old wasn’t ready and fans noticed a lack of match fitness.

It remains to be seen what our frontline looks like against Brighton. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have also got back some confidence during the pre-season. Hopefully, we can get over the line against the Seagulls.
