Sir Alex Ferguson has been given a new role at Manchester United, with the legendary manager now part of a think-tank focusing on infrastructure at the club and relationship with fans, according to The Daily Mail (h/t Metro).

Richard Arnold has brought together a team of legendary figures with him. It includes Ferguson, Bryan Robson and David Gill alongside current director of football John Murtough.

The new role will be more influential than the previous symbolic ones. The former United manager and former CEO have been non-executive directors on the board since 2013.

The think-tank’s purpose is not to get involved in the affairs of Erik ten Hag. Rather, the five-person team are supposed to look after other areas of the club, such as the redevelopment of Old Trafford and Carrington.

It’s been a few years since the Red Devils have made any changes to their home ground and training facility. The Theatre of Dreams should be brought up to the standards of other world-class stadiums in England.

Another aspect the think-tank will supposedly look after is the club’s relationship with the fans. Over the years, spectators have felt clubs aren’t looking out for the people’s interest. Rising ticket and merchandise prices reflect that.

Club fans have also been angry about the hierarchy not listening to them. Last season, we saw some of the biggest protests by followers of various teams against the idea of the Super League.

Hopefully, the team of legends can put the point of view of fans across the table at United. Also, who’s better than a manager who was in the Old Trafford dugout for 26 seasons to give recommendations around the remodelling of the stadium?

All some supporters will look for is that these legends don’t influence the direction Ten Hag wants to take. Instead, the Dutch manager needs to be given free rein to steer United towards challenging for titles.
