Frenkie de Jong willing to take a pay cut to stay at Barcelona amidst persistent Manchester United links

Frenkie de Jong is ‘open’ to taking a pay cut at Barcelona and staying at the Camp Nou this summer in an apparent snub to a move to Manchester United, according to AS (h/t Express).

The 25-year-old has been on the Red Devils’ shortlist since the beginning of the transfer window. Erik Ten Hag’s arrival in Manchester has increased speculation about the midfielder moving away from Spain.

Xavi has spoken with De Jong about his future at Barcelona. The Spaniard wants the 25-year-old to ‘make an effort’ to ensure his future with the Blaugrana.

The Dutch national made a name for himself under Ten Hag at Ajax before moving to the Camp Nou. Since moving to the Spanish giants in 2019, the 25-year-old has been an important part of the Barcelona side.

De Jong has the qualities to come to Old Trafford and make a difference in the middle of the park. The Dutch national is capable of playing in a double or single pivot in the midfield as well as in a more advanced position in the middle of the park.

With Paul Pogba gone, the United squad could use a quality midfielder for Ten Hag to trust. The Frenchman was an important member of the side and did have his moments, although not consistently.

Fred and Scott McTominay played the majority of last season as the two pivots in the side. While the duo haven’t been able to convince fans, the Brazilian did show glimpses of quality when played a bit further.

We have other midfielders like Donny van de Beek, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes, but all of them are more attacking options. James Garner is a promising prospect but hasn’t been tested in the Premier League.

We’re lacking a quality box-to-box midfielder. If we end up missing out on De Jong, the Red Devils need to have an alternate option to pursue.
