Manchester United given green light to complete Memphis Depay deal
According to The Express, Manchester United will be able to pursue Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay as his future at Camp Nou remains in doubt. It would be safe to say that the Red Devils would need to sign an attacker if Cristiano Ronaldo decides to move on.
Erik ten Hag’s side has already witnessed Edinson Cavani leave and with the Portuguese’s future being uncertain, they will need to bring in a top-class striker. That is where, Netherlands international, Memphis Depay would fit in as the player is well known around Old Trafford as he featured for the club between 2015-17.
It would be advised that a player should never return back to a club that has haunted his past but, things would be alluring this time for the forward. The 28-year-old would be able to seek repentance this time or be able to enjoy better fortune.
Manchester United risks losing Depay’s teammate Frenkie de Jong as Barcelona appears unwilling to pay his pending wages. With the club facing difficulty in signing the midfielder, they would be able to shift their focus on another Barcelona player who would not find it difficult to leave the club due to his low release clause.
The Spanish giants have signed Bayern Munich ace Robert Lewandowski and the Polish would unquestionably start in place of the Dutchman. The former Lyon attacker could be forced out after just 18 months at Camp Nou. With just a year left on his contract, Depay might also be available on a cut-price deal.
Premier League foes, Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in targeting the experienced striker. The 28-year-old didn’t have his best years at Old Trafford as he was unable to deliver consistent performances. However, his move to French giants Lyon did change his career as he was able to score 76 goals and provide 55 assists in just 176 appearances.
Barcelona soon came calling as he decided to move a step ahead in his recently illustrated career. However, Xavi hasn’t used him on a regular basis and the Polish striker’s signing would further hamper his chances of being a regular player.
If the reports are true then Manchester United would get the green signal to go after the Dutch star. Memphis Depay has brought physicality, and flexibility to his game since joining Lyon.
This would be an asset for Erik ten Hag as the former United player would add goals and depth to the current squad. Being Dutch, he would probably find it easier to go around the manager and grasp his philosophies well.
