Manchester United add Leicester City star Youri Tielemans and Wolves ace Ruben Neves to the transfer shortlist
According to talkSPORT (h/t The Mirror), Manchester United have added Leicester City star Youri Tielemans and Wolves ace Ruben Neves to their transfer shortlist for this summer. They are being lined up as a safety net in case of a situation in which Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong does not end up at Carrington.
De Jong is identified as Erik ten Hag’s top target for this summer due to the desperate need to improve the midfield options. However, Man United have failed to complete a move for the holding midfielder so far, which has led to increasing uncertainty with each passing day.
As such, the Red Devils have started preparing a list of targets, with Tielemans and Neves being the two alternative options. With de Jong wanting to remain at Camp Nou beyond this summer, Man United would perhaps need to look elsewhere to meet their needs after the massive exodus in midfield.
Time to look elsewhere?
Signing de Jong would have been a massive statement indeed as he could have been played in his natural role just like ten Hag did at Ajax. But we cannot afford to waste time and risk our entire transfer business chasing after one player even if it means that he is our primary target.
Hence, it does make sense why we have started to look elsewhere, and both Tielemans and Neves are great options indeed. That being said, it would be best if we could bring in both of them as they could be ideal to be utilised together in a double pivot system.
Neves can focus more on the defensive side of things, while Tielemans may be the one to progress the ball due to being tasked with the technical duties. At the same time, both of them are also adept at doing each others’ tasks, making them a solid combination for the future.
Leicester are desperate to raise some cash, and with Tielemans seeing his contract expiring next summer, perhaps they can be bargained with to sell the Belgian on a cut-price deal. The 25-year-old did showcase last season that he can play in deep-lying areas, making him a sensible target indeed.

Neves has grown over the years to become one of the best in his positions in the Premier League. The Portuguese international could be ideal for the “Nemanja Matic” role at Old Trafford as the 25-year-old has performed more than well enough for Wolverhampton Wanderers over the past few seasons or so.
In any case, it remains to be seen how this situation will pan out to be in the coming days or weeks. Let’s hope that a quick solution can be found, as we have only brought in Tyrell Malacia so far in this transfer window.
