Feyenoord set to open transfer talks with Manchester United for Tahith Chong
According to the Dutch media outlet 1908 on Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News), Feyenoord are in line to begin talks with Manchester United for signing Tahith Chong on a permanent transfer this summer. He has endured a difficult time over the past year or so, which could lead him to the end of the road for his time in Carrington.
Chong is currently contracted until the summer of 2023 with Man United, but they could decide to part ways with him for a fee to prevent losing him for nothing in the future. The Eredivisie side is interested in securing his services and is looking to prise him away permanently in this transfer window.
The Dutch club is growing in confidence about their chances of completing a move for the 22-year-old. That is because Feyenoord have recently reached an agreement with the Red Devils over Tyrell Malacia, which they believe will assist them in their pursuit.
Chong to leave Man Utd?
The right-wing is one of the areas where we are a bit short-handed when it comes to reliable options in the first-team set-up. After all, Jadon Sancho was converted to a left-winger by Ralf Rangnick, while Mason Greenwood is suspended indefinitely by the Manchester side.
We have other options like Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga, but their best performances have come on the opposite side of the pitch. That could perhaps lead to suggestions that Chong could have a chance to make a case for himself as he is primarily a right-winger in trade, even if he lacks the experience.
Chong’s loan at Birmingham City last season turned awry as he ran into a major injury which seriously halted his development. Despite that, the Dutch attacker did show some promise, having scored two goals and assisted four times from 21 appearances across all competitions.
What’s more, Chong has also shown extreme flexibility to be utilised across the frontline while also being able to play as a number ten when called upon. Left and right midfield were also some of the positions that he was able to gain experience in with Birmingham.
Hence, Chong could perhaps be given some opportunities in pre-season to see if Erik ten Hag is impressed with his displays. If not, we could look to entertain the approach from Feyenoord and sell the forward for a solid fee in the summer transfer window.
