Manchester United linked Ash Phillips to sign a professional contract with Blackburn Rovers
According to Lancashire Telegraph, Ash Phillips, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United, will sign a professional contract with Blackburn Rovers shortly. This news would undoubtedly be a blow for the Premier League side as they have seemingly lost out on a youngster who is regarded to be one of the best in the position of his age group.
Phillips had only signed a scholarship deal last summer, but the interest from several major clubs forced their hands to go down this route. In fact, an agreement over a pro-contract that will see him tied down for at least three more years was already reached and will be signed on July 1.
Man United have been touted as a potential destination, and this update would be a difficult pill to swallow indeed. Chelsea have also been linked with a move for the English prospect, with Tottenham Hotspur showing the most interest in his signature. But all three of them appear to have failed in their pursuit of his teenager.
More transfer blows for Man Utd!
It looks like we are finding it difficult to make signings at the youth level as well, going by this latest setback. The 17-year-old has been playing with age groups higher than Phillips at this point, with him being in line to enjoy more minutes in the U-23 academy setup.
In fact, Phillips has also been in and around the senior level, which is a nod to the quality that he possesses at such a young age. His physical build, coupled with his prowess on the ball, has helped him make the impact he has made so far at the developmental level.
Signing the Blackburn ace would have been a massive boost for us, as Phillips could prove to be a future superstar in the making if he is provided with the right support and guidance. We do need someone in the centre-back role who can lead the team after a couple of years in the future.

Phillips could have been that man, but that is no longer on the cards because of his contract that will be activated this summer. Perhaps we could now try to target him sometime in the future while keeping an eye on how he progresses moving forward.
If that is the case, then Spurs and the Blues could also be thinking similarly, so we need to be on our toes at all times when it comes to the prospect of pursuing after Phillips in the future.
