Transfer News: Ruben Neves transfer still a possibility for Manchester United
According to Jornal di Noticias via SportsWitness, Manchester United still in the picture for Ruben Neves with Barcelona seems to be ruled out from the race.
Since joining Wolverhampton Wanderers from FC Porto over half a decade ago, Neves has come a long way. In his first season at the Molineux, the 25-year-old helped the Midlands club gain promotion to the Premier League, and he has since helped them establish themselves as a fixture in the top division.
Neves’ achievements have not gone unnoticed, with several of Europe’s top teams, including Barcelona and Manchester United eyeing him. After five years at Wolverhampton Wanderers, the footballer appears to be ready for a fresh challenge.
Now a scenario has arisen in which Neves may choose to sign new terms rather than pursue a move abroad. Wolves might offer their prized asset a deal worth €4 million per year after tax, which would be a significant rise over his present salary at the Premier League club.
With only two years left on Neves’ contract, Wolves find themselves in a position where their star player’s value would fall if he is allowed to reach the last year of his contract.
Wolves are said to be unwilling to accept any offers below €50 million, a position that will most probably rule out cash-strapped Barcelona.
Manchester United are the only club left in the hunt. However, whether the Red Devils would take a strong step of recruiting Neves for such a high price is still unknown as they haven’t made any genuine approaches.
The Manchester United fans were not pleased with the club’s choice not to strengthen their defensive midfield last summer. That did play a significant role in their troubles from the previous season, making it all the more crucial to address them before the next campaign begins.
However, we are likely to lose Nemanja Matic this summer on a free transfer, putting us in a difficult scenario. After all, we don’t have any natural Matic replacements in the squad, however it remains to be seen if James Garner, who had a good loan spell at Nottingham Forest, can get into the first team.

Neves, who has accumulated tremendous Premier League experience over the years, would be an excellent addition. In addition, he’d be a natural fit as a holding midfielder.
The current scenario provides the upper hand to United. But whether our board would take advantage of the opportunity is still unknown. It remains to be seen how the situation unfolds in the coming days.
