Fabrizio Romano reveals why Manchester United did not actively pursue Darwin Nunez

According to Fabrizio Romano, writing in his column for Caught Offside, Manchester United had decided not to actively pursue Darwin Nunez and complete his signing this summer. He will join Liverpool shortly, with an official announcement set to follow soon in the next few days.

Man United had tried to sign Nunez in the summer transfer window, having shown an interest in his qualities. Erik ten Hag also named the striker as one of the potential options to the board, and the club had maintained contact with his agent until last Friday. However, it was decided that it would be best not to target him any longer.

That is because the Red Devils view Nunez as a €70million player and not a €100million one which is what Jurgen Klopp’s side is offering to Benfica for his services. Ten Hag understands the club’s decision as signing the Uruguayan international would have put their transfer plans at risk this summer.

Good decision by Man Utd?

It is understandable why the Manchester side have gone down this route, especially when there are other positions in the squad that must be bolstered. Our valuation of Nunez is far apart from what the Reds have paid for the centre-forward, so this decision is certainly a wise one indeed.

While we have lost out on one of the highly-rated attackers in world football as of now, all is not lost as there are players out there in the market who would fall under our needs. Romano has also claimed that the Mancunians would keep searching for other strikers to add to their forward department.

If that is the case, then one would expect ten Hag’s side to finally fixate on an option that would not cost too much like Nunez. However, our pursuit of a centre-forward would depend on outgoings as well, with Anthony Martial stated to be on the cards to leave Old Trafford this summer.

More Manchester United News

It is important that we bring in a centre-forward addition this summer, considering how Edinson Cavani has left Carrington on a free transfer. That leaves us with just Cristiano Ronaldo in the squad as the dependable option for the striker role, which is not ideal for a long season.

Ronaldo is past his best days, and he would have to be replaced in the future anyway. Mason Greenwood has been suspended indefinitely, while Marcus Rashford has struggled throughout the last campaign, which highlights the need to bring in a solid reinforcement. The fans hope to see that happen, so it remains to be seen who that will be this summer.
