According to ESPN, Manchester City are currently engaged in a tussle with Manchester United to facilitate a potential transfer for RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku this summer. He has been quite sensational for his side, having helped them win the DFB Pokal title last season.

Nkunku has certainly made a mark in European football in the previous campaign with his 35 goals and 19 assists from 50 matches across all competitions. That is quite an impressive tally indeed, and it is no wonder why several top Premier League sides have circled to prise him away in the summer transfer window.

Man United are one of the interested parties, but they are now joined by their city rivals, the Citizens, in this transfer race. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are actively pursuing the French international as well, which has created an all-out war between five of the “Big 6” PL clubs for his services.

Can Man Utd sign Nkunku?

The 24-year-old versatility to play anywhere in the attack, even as an attacking midfielder, is what makes him stand out at this moment. What’s more, he is quite able to be productive in all those positions, which could be just what we need considering the current squad composition in our frontline.

The Red Devils are set to lose Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata on free transfers at the end of this month. Replacing all three of them in a single transfer window could be difficult and even costly, considering how we also need to bolster our midfield and defence as well.

As such, we could negate our needs to an extent by signing someone flexible enough to be utilised in several positions. Nkunku can be that man, and his output from the previous season is enough to convince us that he could end up being effective for us.

In fact, more spots in the attack could be freed up this summer, depending on how the future pans out with several players. Mason Greenwood’s indefinite suspension means that we lack a dependable right-wing option, giving all the more reasons to target Nkunku.

Anthony Martial’s future is uncertain, which could pave the way for his exit, while Cristiano Ronaldo would not be with us longer as he is close to the end of his playing career. Nkunku could be helpful to negate the eventual departure of the talisman, looking at his excellent performances.

However, the interest from all these PL rivals could potentially scupper our plans to secure Nkunku’s services. That’s not all, as the Bundesliga ace’s desire to return to Paris Saint-Germain could also be problematic if PSG decides to pursue their academy prospect moving forward.
