Transfer News: Manchester United rival Chelsea for Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries
According to Tancredi Palmeri of SportItalia on Twitter (h/t The Express), Manchester United will battle it out with Chelsea for the signature of Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries in the summer transfer window. He has enjoyed quite an impressive time for club and country over the past year or so, which has seen him get linked with a move to the Premier League.
Man United have identified Dumfries as a potential option to improve their full-back areas ahead of the next season. Erik ten Hag has deemed one of the wide areas as one of their weak spots, which has prompted them to turn their attention to the right-back.
Now, they will need to deal with the Blues, who are keen to bolster their choices as well moving forward. Furthermore, Inter’s sporting director Piero Ausilio has arrived in London to meet with both English clubs to engage in discussions about a potential move for Dumfries this summer.
Dumfries, a right-back addition for Man Utd?
Those who have watched ten Hag’s Ajax would know that his full-backs are tasked with a greater role in the attacking phase. While Diogo Dalot does suit his tactics in that regard, the same cannot be said for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, considering how he has struggled to make an impact in the forward department.
That could perhaps explain the reason why it is thought that Wan-Bissaka is in line to be axed this summer. If that is the case, then the Red Devils must bring in an adequate reinforcement to plug the gap that will be left following his potential departure.
After all, we cannot go an entire campaign with Dalot as our only option, which makes Dumfries a kind of a necessity if Wan-Bissaka is sold this summer. That being said, we now have to deal with the West Londoners, who are in the mix to sign the Nerazzurri ace as well.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are in a far better place than us right now as we are set to undergo a rebuilding phase under ten Hag, unlike the case at Stamford Bridge. That makes them more of a title contender than us at this moment, but it remains to be seen whether that will play a part in this pursuit or not moving forward.

Tuchel’s team would probably pose a stern competition for us, considering how they are at risk of losing key players in their right wing-back slot. Reece James has attracted attention from Manchester City and Real Madrid, while Cesar Azpilicueta is being targeted by Barcelona, which has put them in a precarious situation.
As such, we must remain wary and facilitate a move at the earliest before the London-based club would have a chance to make their case for Dumfries. Let’s hope to see a positive outcome in the meeting that is set to be held with Ausilio shortly.
