Transfer News: Manchester United in pole position to sign Real Madrid star Marco Asensio
According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo [Print Edition] (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United have placed themselves in the pole position for the signature of Real Madrid star Marco Asensio for a summer transfer. He has been linked with an exit from Santiago Bernabeu, and it seems like he could be in line for a switch to Old Trafford.
Asensio’s future has been surrounded by uncertainty for quite some time now, having lost the prominence he once had in the Real squad. That’s not all, as he is set to enter the final year of his current contract in the Spanish capital at the end of this month.
As such, with the 2022 Qatar World Cup drawing close, the Spanish international wants to leave the Madrid club in search of more consistent game time. And Man United are stated to be “in the lead” to facilitate a transfer move for him ahead of the upcoming season.
Man Utd’s new right-winger?
The 26-year-old has seen his minutes with Los Blancos dwindle over the past few seasons, which has eventually led to this situation. Asensio was tipped to reach the top when he had initially broken through for his side all those years ago.
However, a series of unfortunate events like injuries, competition and managerial changes saw the La Liga ace lose prominence over the years. Now, Asensio has reached a crucial point as he is set to enter the prime years of his playing career, and he must make a crucial decision this summer.
While Asensio is not the man he once was, perhaps earning regular minutes could reinvigorate his stagnated progress and help him get back to his old self. Erik ten Hag has already declared how there is a need to reinforce the right-wing position due to the lack of a dependable option in that role.
In such a case, Asensio would be of great help to us, looking at his performances from last season despite often being used as a squad player by Carlo Ancelotti. He has 12 goals and two assists to his name during that period from just 2110 minutes, which constitutes around 23 games across all competitions.

One might wonder how Asensio would perform if he is regular in a particular team. Signing him would solve our lack of natural options on the right-wing this summer. The Red Devils are seemingly looking like they have identified a market opportunity as they are the frontrunners to securing his services.
However, ten Hag’s side must remain wary, as Juventus are also one of the leaders of this transfer pursuit. That makes up for an interesting couple of weeks up ahead now that the transfer window has officially opened.
