Manchester United in a transfer battle with Newcastle United for Brighton star Leandro Trossard
According to Belgian TV channel RTBF (h/t The Sun), Manchester United are currently engaged in a transfer battle with Newcastle United for signing Brighton star Leandro Trossard this summer. He enjoyed a solid campaign for his side last season, having helped them to achieve their highest finish in the Premier League in their history.
Now, it looks like Trossard’s performances have not gone under the radar as Man United have joined the race to secure his services. That being said, they will have to deal with Newcastle, who are looking to improve the project that has already given them a successful foundation.
The Belgian international will see his current contract with Brighton and Hove Albion expire at the end of the next season. That makes him a great proposition for any season if an extension would be out of the cards this summer. Then again, whether his team would be willing to part ways with him or not remains to be seen.
Where would Trossard fit at Man Utd?
Graham Potter had utilised Trossard in a host of roles at Amex Stadium last season, but the latter’s primary position is on the left wing. Another left-winger is the last thing that we need right now as there are a lot of options for Erik ten Hag to choose from in our squad.
Then again, Potter has also used Trossard as a centre-forward on several occasions, so perhaps the attacker could prove to be useful for us in that role. The Belgian has performed quite well in that position giving us more reasons to consider that possibility moving forward.
Trossard had made 34 Premier League appearances in the 2021-22 campaign and has scored eight goals and assisted three more during that period. That is a solid return indeed, and one would expect him to do better in a superior team.
The 27-year-old had several great moments for the Seagulls last season, with his later winner in the 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur being one of them. The forward was arguably the best player on the day when his side thrashed us 4-0, which showcases how he could be ready to face a bigger challenge in the future.

Last month, the Premier League ace revealed that he is keeping his options at this moment, suggesting that an exit could be on the cards. If ten Hag believes he would have a role for Trossard in his team, then the management must do their best to back the man in charge.
However, the Magpies would not sit idly by as they would probably look to use their financial might to help with their case. As for Potter’s side, perhaps they could be forced to sell Trossard this summer as they are at risk of losing him for free after the upcoming campaign.
