According to talkSPORT (h/t The Sun), Manchester United are “seriously interested” in signing Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of the next season. He has struggled to earn regular minutes under Jurgen Klopp in the previous campaign, which has forced his future into uncertain waters.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is “desperate” to leave Anfield in search of regular first-team minutes, having played a bit-part role last season. As such, Man United are looking to take advantage of this situation by prising him away in the summer transfer window. That being said, it is unknown whether he would entertain a move to Old Trafford due to the bitter rivalry between both clubs.

The Red Devils would actively pursue the England international only if Klopp’s side would agree to part ways with him on a cut-price deal. The former are looking to facilitate a transfer move for a fee in the region of £10million but whether that will be possible or not remains to be seen.

Man Utd need Oxlade-Chamberlain?

The 28-year-old was largely restricted to minutes that were not even meaningful last campaign as he was often kept out of the squad as well during that period. As such, if there are plans to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain, then we must remain rigid in our stance and only facilitate a deal on our demands.

The Reds ace had featured for just 1526 minutes last season, scoring three goals and assists each in the process. The Mancunians are set to undergo a massive exodus in the midfield at the end of this month, which could explain why they are looking for market opportunities at this moment.

Oxlade-Chamberlain can be one such case, although serious questions can be raised on whether we need him at all. It would be wise on the board’s part to only target him if Erik ten Hag demands the midfielder’s services in the summer transfer window. Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign the Premier League ace back in 2011, but whether ten Hag would do the same or not would only be known in due time.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is more of a box to box midfielder in trade which is not the profile we are desperate for in the centre of the pitch. Signing players that suit our needs is of maximum importance in our current delicate situation, which means that we must prevent mistakes like the one we made with Aaran Wan-Bissaka, for example.

We are in line to lose Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic at the base of the midfield this summer. That means we need players who are technical enough to compensate for their departures ahead of the upcoming season. Hence, pursuing Oxlade-Chamberlain does not make sense when we already have the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay, who are of similar profile in our team.
