Manchester United make first official transfer bid for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong
According to the Spanish news outlet Marca (h/t The Express), Manchester United have put in their first official bid to facilitate a potential transfer for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong this summer. The former have plans to back Erik ten Hag with squad reinforcements and seems to have taken the first step to help in that regard.
Man United are trying their best to bring de Jong to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window. They want to support ten Hag with signing and are looking to reinforce the declined midfield as a result. Now, it seems that they have raised the pressure to complete a move for the midfielder.
The Red Devils have placed a £68.3million proposal on the table for Barca to accept in the coming days. The English side will pay £51.2million as guaranteed transfer fees, with £17million being in bonuses that will be triggered if certain performance-related objectives are achieved. Whether this attempt would be successful or not remains to be seen.
Would Man Utd’s approach be successful?
We have been chasing the 25-year-old for quite some time now, and the lack of significant progress has certainly left the fanbase frustrated, to say the least. But it looks like there may be some changes after all since the Mancunians have tabled an offer from their side.
Even if the transfer window has not opened just yet, we must ramp up the efforts and reach an agreement as soon as possible. After all, it would always be best to bring in our targets and integrate them into the system at the earliest. With midfield being a concern following Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba’s exits, the supporters are hoping to see some dealings this summer to address the problem.
Fortunately, the Blaugrana side are claimed to be seriously considering the proposal as the offer is somewhat close to their valuation of the La Liga superstar. In such a case, they may just be influenced to part ways with de Jong despite the midfielder having four years left in his current contract.
However, de Jong has already expressed his intention to stay at Camp Nou while also having concerns about a move to Old Trafford due to the lack of Champions League football. Furthermore, Xavi Hernandez is a fan of the midfielder, so it remains to be seen if he would approve a sale even if the board does this summer.

However, the biggest issue is still the Spanish giants’ stance on selling de Jong, as they are not desperate to part ways with him as of now. Xavi’s side are set to hold an assembly to approve certain financial packages to boost their books of accounts which could get them out of their current plight.
That could be problematic as they may no longer be forced to sell de Jong if those packages are approved on 16 June. So let’s keep a close eye on how that meeting develops as it could determine our chances to prise away the former Ajax man.
