Transfer News: Manchester United are keeping tabs on Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries
According to the Italian news outlet Calciomercato (h/t The Sun), Manchester United are currently keeping tabs on the situation of Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries ahead of the summer transfer window. He has enjoyed a great run of form for club and country over the past year or so, which has seen him get on the radar of multiple clubs.
Man United are set to facilitate a squad overhaul as they look to support Erik ten Hag in the rebuilding process. Ten Hag has already prepared a list of targets that they need to sign, which also includes Dumfries. The latter is stated to be at the top of the shortlist and could actively be pursued as a result.
As such, the Red Devils have started to monitor the Dutch international as they look to prise him away this summer. However, they may face competition from Bayern Munich for the right-back’s services. That could potentially lead to a transfer tussle ahead of the next season.
Dumfries- summer signing for Man Utd?
It is understandable why we are pursuing a right-back at this moment, considering how Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s profile does not suit our current style of play. In fact, the Manchester side are willing to sell the defender to recoup as much as possible from the £50million they paid for him to Crystal Palace.
In such a case, we would be left short-handed since Diogo Dalot would be the only option left in our ranks following Wan-Bissaka’s potential departure. Dumfries would undoubtedly be a solid choice to add to the full-back position looking at his excellent displays for club and country in recent times.
Dumfries has been playing as a right wing-back for Inter, although he has shown with the Netherlands his ability to play in a four-at-the-back formation. In such a case, the 26-year-old would be a great reinforcement to our backline, which could even lead to healthy competition with Dalot.
Fortunately for us, the Nerazzurri are ready to accept proposals for Dumfries as it increases their chances of keeping hold of Alessandro Bastoni beyond this summer. We have also expressed an interest in Bastoni, but it appears that ten Hag prefers the full-back as he is at the top of the list.

We have other centre-back targets like Matthijs de Ligt and Jurrien Timber which could explain our decision to choose Dumfries over Bastoni. That being said, Bayern Munchen could be an issue as they can offer Champions League football and are in a far better place than us.
Then again, Bayern did sign Noussair Mazraoui from Ajax last month, and they also have Benjamin Pavard in their team. Hence, one could say that we could gain an edge over them due to our ability to offer regular minutes, which is crucial with the 2022 Qatar World Cup being on the horizon.
