Manchester United make transfer enquiry for Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni
According to Mail Online, Manchester United have made an enquiry to facilitate a transfer for Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni this summer. He has followed up his promise from the 2020-21 season with an impressive tenure last campaign, which has seen him become one of the best in the business in the Serie A during that period.
Man United are set to undergo a squad overhaul as part of their rebuild under Erik ten Hag. The defence is one such area that is desperate for reinforcements in the summer transfer window. After all, they conceded a whopping 57 goals in the Premier League last season, which is their worst tally since the 1978-79 campaign.
As such, they have identified Bastoni as one of the options to bolster the centre-back role ahead of the upcoming season. Now, it seems like they have taken another step in their pursuit, having approached Inter to discuss a potential move for him this summer.
Can Man Utd succeed in their attempt?
Harry Maguire’s struggles in the backline have pretty much been highlighted throughout the previous campaign. While his faults are not entirely down to him, as the imbalance in midfield has caused him to get caught out of position on several occasions, there is no doubt that he has not been at his best either.
Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe are set to leave Old Trafford this summer, while Phil Jones has attracted interest from several PL clubs. Even our other options, like Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof, have not performed in the best possible manner indicating the need to sign someone in that role.
Bastoni would undoubtedly be a perfect addition as he would not only protect our long-term interests but also significantly improve our backline right now. However, we have to wait and see what the response from the Nerazzurri would be regarding our inquiry.
The 23-year-old is currently valued at around £50million, which is quite reasonable for a man of his talents. Then again, the board must carefully assess their transfer budget before spending such an amount on one player as other areas must be bolstered in the squad as well.

But that is not the only concern for us as Tottenham Hotspur have also registered their interest in the Italian centre-half. That could be a setback for us due to Antonio Conte’s previous affiliation with Bastoni. Furthermore, Spurs’ director Fabio Paratici is quite known for his expertise in the Serie A market, adding to our problems in this pursuit.
Then again, we have affiliations with the Italian giants as well due to the business that involved the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Young and Alexis Sanchez in the past. Whether that would give us an edge or not, though, would need to be seen.
