David de Gea is set to be named captain of Manchester United next season
According to the Sun, Manchester United superstar David de Gea is set to assume armband responsibilities at the club next season in the new project under Erik ten Hag.
The Spaniard has been a sensational servant for the Red Devils over the years. The talented shot-stopper joined Man United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has had 11 largely successful years at the club except for a couple of seasons.
This season however has been refreshing for the Spaniard who has discovered his best form and has arguably been the best keeper in the Premier League despite playing for an underperforming team. The 31-year-old has played 46 games for the club this season conceding 66 goals and keeping 10 clean sheets across all competitions.
Harry Maguire has been United’s captain for the past few seasons but it seems like the underperforming centre-back is set to be relieved of his armband responsibilities and the Spaniard could take over.
Reward for consistency?
One of the longest-serving players for Manchester United, it is high time David de Gea was rewarded for his longevity with the armband.
The Spaniard might have gotten the chance earlier but a wretched run of form in the past couple of seasons leading up to this campaign meant that the shot-stopper did not help his chances of leading the Red Devils in the past. However, the situation has turned around now.
Manchester United are amidst a rebuild under new manager Erik ten Hag as they look to build a competitive squad for next season. Leading the new project could be the Spaniard as he looks to continue the impressive performances next season as well.
One of the very few players who are almost assured of a place in Erik ten Hag’s team next season, it remains to be seen how David de Gea manages to lead the United squad as they look to book their place at the summit of English football again.

Captaincy is a reward long coming for David de Gea. It remains to be seen how the Spaniard handles the additional pressure if he indeed has the captain’s armband next season.
He is vocal at the back and has time and again shown that his voice carries weight and respect in the backline. He knows the ins and outs of the club by this point and has the Man Utd DNA rooted in him.
