Benfica star Darwin Nunez prefers Liverpool move over Manchester United transfer
According to The Independent, Benfica star Darwin Nunez prefers to move to Liverpool instead of joining Manchester United on a potential transfer. He enjoyed yet another season with his current club last term, having built on the success he had made in the 2020-21 campaign.
Erik ten Hag wants to sign a centre-forward and has identified Nunez as his priority this summer. Plans are being laid down to overhaul the Man United squad to facilitate a rebuild ahead of the next season. As such, they are willing to go blow for blow with the Reds who are in a far better situation as of now.
That being said, the Manchester club would be concerned by the Uruguayan’s preference to move to Anfield in the upcoming transfer window. However, his entourage is open to hearing the proposal from ten Hag’s side, with the latter looking to turn over a new page this summer.
Man Utd have some ground to cover
With Edinson Cavani being set to leave Old Trafford at the end of this month, we need a striker who can fill in his boots moving forward. Nunez would be a perfect addition as he is already being viewed as a suitable successor to Cavani and even Luis Suarez at this moment.
Signing Nunez would ensure that ten Hag can also manage Cristiano Ronaldo’s minutes much better, with the latter being in the twilight of his playing career. The Primeira Liga ace would also take some of the responsibilities from Ronaldo as we often had to depend on the talisman for goals throughout the previous campaign.
However, we need to make a case for ourselves in the best possible manner and convince Nunez that he will be the main option to lead the frontline moving forward. While Cristiano still has enough quality in his bag, it is high time that we reduce his prominence so that he can be useful in the long run.
Nunez has certainly proven his worth looking at his performances even in the Champions League, which means that he could be the man to lead the attack in ten Hag’s project. However, we have another problem to deal with, which is his massive price tag of around £100million.
The Portuguese side is aware of our intentions to sign the 22-year-old, and they have set this asking price with Nunez being among the most prized assets this summer. Andreas Pereira is touted to be used as a makeweight to reduce the valuation to something more reasonable, but whether that will be the case or not would only be known in due time.

Convincing Nunez to choose us over the Merseysiders would be a hefty challenge indeed, but perhaps the project we are building under ten Hag could be enough to convince him of a move. One could even say that the forward would earn more minutes with us since competition is far higher in Klopp’s team.
