Manchester United in doubt about Darwin Nunez transfer due to Benfica stance

According to Daily Star, Manchester United are currently in doubt about finalising a potential transfer for Darwin Nunez after Benfica revealed their stance. He is one of the top targets for Erik ten Hag for his plans for a summer rebuild but could face a tough battle to reach an agreement regarding a move.

Nunez has made quite a name for himself with his excellent performances this season. That has earned him interest from Man United, but they are not alone in this transfer race. Barcelona, Chelsea, and Real Madrid are also closely monitoring his situation to make their move at an opportune moment.

The Portuguese outfit has set an outrageous £100million price tag for the Uruguayan’s services ahead of the next term. They could perhaps be looking to take advantage of the high demand for his signature. As such, the Red Devils are fearful about being priced out because of Benfica’s decision.

Man Utd must not accept those terms

Paying that fee for someone who has just made a breakthrough is not feasible in the slightest. Even if Nunez had a solid campaign last term, he only rose to the top for the first time this season. Moreover, the 22-year-old is far from being a finished product as well, adding to the reasons why that value is unrealistic as of now.

It is good to know that the Mancunians also feel the same way as they are unwilling to pay that fee for the South American when he has not made even 60 appearances for Benfica so far. Hence, they have demanded the Portuguese side to name a realistic price, so it remains to be seen what the response will be in the coming days.

That means the Manchester club have not pulled out of the race due to the valuation as they are eager to sign the Primeira Liga ace. At the same time, Man United are adamant that they will not be pushovers and would turn their attention to other targets if a favourable response is not received.

United fans would hope that both parties can find common ground in the coming weeks and facilitate a transfer for Nunez. After all, signing a centre-forward would be one of the priorities looking at the lack of options in the attack who can instil confidence about the club’s better future.

Edinson Cavani is bound to leave Old Trafford this summer, and Anthony Martial could follow suit as well given he was let go mid-season on a loan spell at Sevilla, where he failed to impress. Marcus Rashford would be hoping to overcome his poor run of form, but that means he cannot be counted on just yet. Mason Greenwood continues to be suspended, which highlights the need for a striker.

Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, is past his best days but can still prove to be a solid option moving forward. However, we cannot depend on him regularly as others also need to pick up the slack from the next season onwards. Nunez would greatly help in that regard, but whether an agreement can be reached over a transfer fee or not would need to be seen.

He is young and gave several strong performances in this season’s UEFA Champions League. But whether a handful of games against some of Europe’s best sides are enough for us to spend such an amount on him remains to be seen.
