According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur have identified Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn as a potential transfer target in the summer, which will come as a transfer blow to Manchester United.

McGinn has been one of the standout stars for Villa this term, churning out good performances in the middle of the park on a regular basis. Even with Steven Gerrard taking over as the new manager at Villa Park, the Scotland international has kept his place in the team.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte is looking to sign six new players during the summer transfer window, with the north London club looking to secure Champions League qualification at the end of the season. The Lilywhites need one more point on the final day of the campaign, with the side already sitting in fourth place in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils could also be in the running for the Scotsman (h/t The Sun), having already shown interest in him this season. The midfield is an area that needs additions, given how inconsistent their current crop of options has been this season.

Failed January transfer target

The 27-year-old has another three years left on his contract at Villa Park, with the midfielder signing an extension in 2020. This was offered to him after the Villans spent a full campaign in the Premier League, having earnt promotion from the Championship.

McGinn has been on United’s radar for a while now, with an attempt being made to sign him in January during the winter transfer window. The Manchester side enquired about his availability, but the club decided against signing a new player under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Conte has done well to lift Tottenham from their earlier position in the league table. The north London club started the season under the tutelage of Nuno Espirito Santo and went unbeaten in the first month, but failed to gain many points in the subsequent weeks.

He was eventually replaced by Conte, who was brought in to turn Tottenham into a side that is capable of competing for titles. The club has not won any silverware in a long time, with their last trophy coming in 2008 when they lifted the League Cup.

The Italian has made the best out of his January signings, Dejan Kulusevki and Rodrigo Bentancur, and will expect Spurs to back him in the summer with more signings. McGinn could perhaps be one of the six new players he wants to bring in but could face competition from United.

The Red Devils would be wise to be in the market for midfield reinforcements, and incoming new manager Erik ten Hag is expected to lead a squad rebuild. It will, however, be curious to see if the Dutchman reignites the club’s interest in McGinn.
