Manchester United target and PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo speaks out about his future ahead of the summer
Speaking to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf (h/t Daily Mail), PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo has provided an update on his future beyond the upcoming summer transfer window, amidst interest from Manchester United.
Gakpo has been in fine form for PSV this term, leading the line for the Dutch side as they tried to wrestle the Eredivisie title away from Ajax Amsterdam. Although they were unsuccessful in their attempt, the forward has earned plaudits for his performances.
The Dutchman spoke about his future at the club at the end of the season, saying that anything could happen in the summer. He insisted that he would calmly compare all the options he had in front of him to see what is best for him, saying that he could still stay in Holland for another year.
“Anything can happen this summer. I will now calmly compare all the options and see what is best for me. Staying another year is also an option.”
The 23-year-old has caught the attention of clubs such as United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona with his goal-scoring ability ahead of the summer transfer window. Evidently, the Red Devils will need to battle a host of clubs for his signature.
“I’ll keep that in mind”
The Holland international is expected to cost between £30m and £40m, and it remains to be seen if any of the other clubs will be willing to splash the cash on the winger. The Gunners have taken the most active approach thus far, holding talks with the player regarding a move in the summer.
Gakpo however, said that he would only be interested in moving if he got a chance to shine at his new club. With the World Cup coming around later this year, he said it would be a shame if he moved and missed out on a chance to go to Qatar.
“It would be a shame if I went somewhere where I wouldn’t get a job at all and I could miss the World Cup. I’ll keep that in mind.”
The opportunity to lead the line for a different club and be the main target man is something that United can offer him, given the uncertainty of the forward line at Old Trafford. Edinson Cavani is expected to leave when his contract runs out in the summer, while Marcus Rashford is considering his future at his boyhood club after a poor season.
Meanwhile, the lack of Champions League football next season could cause the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. This puts the Red Devils in a tough spot, needing replacements for their forwards in the event of an exodus.
Gakpo could very well be the person to target in the summer, although there are a host of other teams to compete with for his services. A winger by trade, he has played centrally a few times during his career. With CR7 and Cavani not spring chickens anymore, any of our attackers shifting centrally could also create a space on the flank for Gakpo to potentially fill in.

Further, with the winger mentioning that he could still stay another year with PSV, the Old Trafford outfit could end up chasing a dead-end by the end of the summer. Only time will tell whether the club’s interest in Gakpo becomes worth the effort.
The club, after all, only signed Jadon Sancho last season. But Amad Diallo’s loan spell at Rangers has been unimpressive while Mason Greenwood’s suspension has left a void to be filled in our attack.
