Transfer News: Manchester United in pole position to sign Victor Osimhen ahead of Arsenal

According to Italian sources via Sport Witness (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are currently in the pole position to secure the services of Napoli star Victor Osimhen ahead of Arsenal. He has enjoyed yet another solid season so far despite a major injury halting his progress during the campaign.

Osimhen’s impressive performances have resulted in him getting linked with a move to the Premier League. Several clubs are interested in signing him, but it is claimed that Man United are at the forefront of the race at this moment.

The Gunners are trailing the pursuit despite being in a better position than the Red Devils on a sporting level. Newcastle United have also expressed their interest to finalise a move for the Nigerian as they look to continue from where they left off in the January transfer window.

Man Utd to sign Osimhen?

The Manchester club could use a centre-forward addition this summer after looking at their current set of options. They have been over-reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo in the attack, which is not feasible considering how we would eventually have to replace the superstar in the future.

Edinson Cavani has endured a poor second season, with him missing out on a major part of the campaign through fitness issues. As such, it would not be a blow for us to see him leave for free when his current contract expires in the summer transfer window.

Marcus Rashford is a shadow of his former self from the last season as he never seemed to play at his best after returning from the surgery at the start of this campaign. Anthony Martial could also be deemed dispensable as he has failed to fully make use of his loan spell at Sevilla so far.

These issues highlight why we need to bring in a striker at the end of this term. Osimhen would undoubtedly be a solid addition indeed, as he has scored 17 goals and six assists to his name this season from 30 appearances across all competitions.

Since leaving Lille back in 2020, the 23-year-old has gradually developed his game with each campaign passing by. He still has much of his playing career left ahead of him, making him an ideal target to lead our frontline for the long term.

However, we should only actively pursue the African star if his profile aligns with what Erik ten Hag wants from his forward. That means the board should discuss the matter with the incoming manager first before looking to complete the striker’s signing.
