Fabrizio Romano reveals key requirement required for Marcus Rashford to remain at Manchester United next season

Speaking on the Que Golazo channel on YouTube (h/t Express), football journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed the key requirement that would convince Marcus Rashford to stay at Manchester United beyond the summer.

The Englishman has suffered a dip in form and confidence when taking to the pitch, which has seen him reduced to a part-time role for the team this season. This has led to speculation about the forward’s future at his boyhood club, and it could be decided by incoming new manager Erik ten Hag.

Romano said that Rashford is looking forward to having a discussion with ten Hag regarding his position in the squad, as the player wants to play in the World Cup. The England international is aware that he needs to be a regular starter in order to make the Three Lions squad.

“He needs to clarify his position because he wants to play in the World Cup and he knows that he can’t continue like this he needs to be a regular starter and an important player for his club so he will have a discussion with Erik Ten Hag in the coming weeks.”

The 24-year-old has seen his position on the flanks be occupied by Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga over the course of the current campaign. Even in the striker role, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani sit ahead of him in the pecking order.

“He wants to change the situation around him”

With the World Cup coming around later in the year, the Carrington graduate is keen to make the flight to Qatar with the rest of the England national team. He was dropped by Gareth Southgate for their upcoming games, which will come as a blow to Rashford.

Romano said that staying at United has been the forward’s priority, but that could yet change depending on the situation at the club. The transfer expert said that Rashford will be happy to stay at Old Trafford if the new manager can guarantee that he will be a starter next term.

“He wants to continue at Man United and that’s always been his priority but not this way, he wants to change the situation around him. So, if Man United and Erik Ten Hag will be able to guarantee him being a starter and an important player for us, he will be happy to stay.”

After a blockbuster start to life in the first team as a teenager, Rashford has waned in form over the past couple of years. He looks like a shadow of the player he once was, scoring twice on his debut for the senior side in the Europa League and then following it up with another brace on his Premier League debut.

He made a move to the wide attacking position later in his United career, starting on the left-wing and terrorising defences with his quick feet and rapid pace. However, he has struggled to get much game time this campaign and has often been overlooked by interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Rashford’s aim is to get back into the England squad, but that may only be guaranteed if he becomes a regular starter for his club. He will be one of the players who will be keen to start afresh next season under a new manager, and looking to make a quick impression on ten Hag.

In the end, it is up to the Dutchman to decide where Rashford’s future lies. If the manager believes he can get the best out of the academy graduate, we can look forward to seeing a different version of the player we have been getting over the past couple of years.
