Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick reveals the factors that determine their summer transfer plans
Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has weighed in on some of the factors that would determine their recruitment plans in the summer transfer window. His side is expected to restructure the entire squad as they look to facilitate a rebuild at the end of the current campaign.
Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is set to take over the reins for the managerial role at Old Trafford this summer. Plans are being laid down for a massive overhaul after this season, with several players expected to leave as the English side is looking to build a strong new project under the incoming coach.
Speaking in the matchday Q&A to the club’s media (h/t Manchester United official website), Rangnick has mentioned that the Red Devils need to find the right balance in the team by building a cohesive team moving forward. He added that they would look at a whole lot of factors like physicality, defensive solidity and possession to determine their plans for the summer transfer business.
“It’s about consistency, and this is what we lacked in the last weeks and months. We lacked consistency; we didn’t always play on that level. And it’s also a question of finding the right balance between what we can do on the pitch in possession of the ball, what do the other teams allow us to do, and what kind of defensive stability, physicality, do we need? This will also be an important issue for the recruitment process for the next season.”
Can Man Utd finally take the right step?
Our performances throughout this campaign paint the picture of a lack of identity which has affected the Manchester club since Sir Alex Ferguson left all those years ago. The lack of cohesion, structure and tactical nous are some of the issues that were noticeable during these displays.
These problems eventually lead to instability within the ranks, which, coupled with the management’s poor planning in recent years, has adversely affected the club’s future. That is the reason why we have failed to even string a consistent amount of good performances this term.
The last time we won two matches in succession was way back in February, which shows the lack of consistency, as Rangnick has mentioned. The causes have been the result of mismanagement over the years, but we must look up ahead and set things up for Ten Hag to take over with the right identity.
Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, the club seems to be getting it wrong when it comes to hiring managers and at times, signing players. That has, over the years, led to the team becoming a collection of individuals rather than a cohesive unit that can suit a manager’s particular system or style.
Recruitment is important. We paid more for Harry Maguire than Liverpool did for Virgil van Dijk and while they got in Andy Robertson from Hull City down the left flank, we got Alex Telles who has really struggled to impose himself as a regular starter.

It is not to say that we should envy our arch-rivals but the club would be wise to look at teams like Manchester City and Liverpool to see what they are doing right and try to implement it in some capacity here.
Let’s hope to see a successful future so that we can finally end our trophy-barren run and get this club to its deserved glory. Rangnick sure has some big words and ideas going by his comments above, and it remains to be seen how the club manages to fulfil it in the summer.
