Transfer News: Manchester United set to offer €100m for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay
According to transfer news from Fichajes (h/t SportsWitness), Manchester United are eyeing to strike a €100m deal with Barcelona for the signature of Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay.
Frenkie de Jong’s output has relatively cooled down in recent seasons, resulting in discomfort in the Dutch star’s mind. Playing 44 matches, the 24-year-old has only been able to secure four goals and five assists for the Catalan team, which is probably not the same output he used to produce for Ajax.
It is believed that Frenkie de Jong would be open to a transfer move if a better offer arrives. Considering Manchester United is interested in the 24-year-old, they would be happy to hear such a piece of news.
Memphis Depay was expected to become Barcelona’s main striker. However, the chain of events has gone against him as Ferran Torres and Luuk de Jong have become preferred choices of the manager. Following the lack of demand, the Catalan team are eyeing to offload him in the coming summer window.
Having a deep interest in both the Barcelona stars, Manchester United are set to offer an uncharacteristic €100m deal to the Catalan team for the duo. Even though a swap deal could have been possible involving Alex Telles and Scott McTominay, that doesn’t seem likely in the current circumstances.
How can the Barca duo help Manchester United?
As the 2022 Qatar World Cu0p is approaching, top-class players would want to show good performances at the club level in order to attract the eyes of their national team manager. But to do that, the Dutchman might require a change of scene, and it seems he has also understood the requirement.
On the other hand, Depay already took a pay cut while joining Barcelona. Now, if he doesn’t get deserved chances to feature under Xavi, then his intentions could also turn around. Having played with the Red Devils during the initial phase of his career, the Dutchman might be comfortable trying his luck with our team.

United already have a lack of depth in the midfield following the departure of Donny van de Beek. As Pual Pogba and Jesse Lingard’s future remains up in the air, they would be much more comfortable bringing De Jong to the team.
In the forward line, Edinson Cavani’s United future doesn’t seem very hopeful. Hence Depay could find an open spot immediately after making the switch.
