Manchester United starlet Anthony Elanga reveals Bruno Fernandes’ reaction to his assist in win vs Brentford

Speaking to reporter Stewart Gardner in the post-match interview with MUTV, as quoted by the club’s official website, Manchester United starlet Anthony Elanga reacted to his team’s 3-0 win over Brentford last night and dedicated the victory to the fans. He also went on to explain how Bruno Fernandes reacted to his assist for United’s opener.

Goals from Bruno, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Raphael Varane ensured that the side finished their final home game of the season on a good note. Following losses against Liverpool and Arsenal and a draw against Chelsea in recent weeks, it seemed like the perfect response from the team.

Elanga felt that they needed to give something back to the fans, who have been supporting them all season long through the good and bad times, and the win against the Bees was the perfect way to do that. He also said that the team needed that win, scoring thrice and keeping a clean sheet.

“I feel like we needed that. We needed to give something back to the fans as well because they’ve been supporting us for the whole season, through the good days and bad days. Three goals, clean sheet, rainy Manchester night, it was really good. We needed it.”

The winger was in fine form as well last night, playing in a front three alongside Ronaldo and Fernandes and contributing to the victory by picking up an assist for the latter’s goal in the opening ten minutes of the match.

“I knew Bruno was in there”

The 20-year-old displayed his rapid pace to latch on to a through ball over the top from Diogo Dalot down the right flank. He managed to get on the end of it to steer his pass straight to the penalty spot, where Fernandes arrived to net the opening goal.

Elanga said that when he got the ball, he knew his Portuguese team-mate would be waiting in there and so just needed to give him a nice little pass into the box. The Swede also mentioned that Fernandes thanked him for the assist at the end.

The academy graduate is enjoying a stellar season at the club, in what has been his breakthrough campaign in the first team at United. The player has grown leaps and bounds since the arrival of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager late last year, who has not shied away from giving the youngster a chance.

The winger’s performances for the Red Devils have also seen him make his international debut for the Sweden national team, confirming his rise to the top in the space of a few months. In what has been a disappointing season at Old Trafford this time around, Elanga has stood out as a rare bright spot.

His fine form for the Manchester side has seen bench experienced stars such as Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata. He has arguably been first-choice on the wings for Rangnick, and it remains to be seen if that continues beyond the summer when Erik ten Hag takes over as the new permanent manager.

For now, Elanga will need to focus on ending the season well not just for himself but also for his club, who are chasing a Champions League qualification spot by the end of the term. With two games remaining in the campaign, the Sweden international will need to deliver the goods for his team in attack and end the season strongly.
