Fabrizio Romano quotes interim boss Ralf Rangnick on the new Manchester United permanent manager

Speaking to Sky Sports News, as relayed by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick spoke about the role of the new permanent manager who would succeed him in the summer.

The German is expected to give up his seat in the dugout at Old Trafford at the end of the season, when his tenure as interim manager expires. He was brought in from Lokomotiv Moscow late last year after United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer was given the boot after nearly three years in charge of the English side, unable to lead the side to any major trophies during his time as head coach. His last season saw the team go through a string of poor results that saw them slip down the Premier League table, which eventually got him fired.

Now, a new permanent manager is expected to come in during the summer to replace the Norwegian, and change the fortunes of the club and usher in a new era of success and silverware. The Manchester side last won a trophy in 2017, lifting the UEFA Europa League under Jose Mourinho’s reign.

“How does he want to play”

Romano quoted Rangnick, who was speaking frankly about the man to come in and succeed him, saying that it was vital to know who the new manager of the club would be to start the recruitment process.

The former RB Leipzig boss insisted that the club needs to know who the manager will be, so they can find the best possible players to fit into the system of how the new head coach wants to play and make his mark in the PL.

“To find the best possible players, only makes sense if you know who will be the manager and how does he want to play”.

Thus far, under Rangnick, United have laboured to sixth place in the league table, sitting three points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who currently occupy the highly contested fourth place. With hopes of winning the league title gone up in smoke, the next best thing to hope for is to qualify for the Champions League next season.

With a UCL spot in danger of being missed out on, and no silverware won this term, it has been a deeply disappointing campaign for the Red Devils. It is hard to imagine that this was the same side that finished as runners up in the PL last year.

Various players and managers have come and gone through the doors at the Theatre of Dreams since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season when we won the league, but none of them have been able to deliver consistently. In fact, very few have lasted more than a couple of years at the club before moving on.

This makes it clear that we need to get our recruitment spot on, as Rangnick said, so we have a clear identity and vision on who we want in the team, who is capable of delivering, and what kind of system we want to implement so we can achieve success on the pitch. It certainly is food for thought for the club hierarchy, as they look to announce a new permanent manager before the summer.

Of course, Erik ten Hag is perhaps the frontrunner to become the new manager. But once the new boss is appointed, perhaps the club can start looking at new players to sign this summer. It is of utmost importance that the board and the manager work in tandem regarding transfer targets because ultimately, it is the gaffer who is responsible for the results and hence, they should have a big say in the recruitment process.
