Sevilla chief Monchi claims the club plan talks with Manchester United loanee Anthony Martial at the end of the season
Speaking to Radio Sevilla (h/t Daily Mail), Sevilla sporting director Monchi said that the club are open to discussing the future of Manchester United forward Anthony Martial at the end of the season, near the end of this loan spell in Spain.
Martial exited United on a temporary basis after he sealed a short-term loan move to Sevilla in the winter transfer window, with the Frenchman expected to return to his parent club at the end of the campaign.
Monchi claimed that the striker’s transfer in January was cheaper than you thought, but it was difficult to analyse his performance for the La Liga side so far due to the various injuries he had suffered while in Spain.
“His transfer was cheaper than you think, but it’s still a big bet, just six or seven million. Unfortunately, it is difficult to analyse Martial’s performance when he was injured and now he is injured again.”
The 26-year-old has made only 11 appearances for Julen Lopetegui’s side since joining in January, scoring just the one goal. He has also been regularly whistled and jeered by Sevilla fans, with the crowd unimpressed with his performances.
“I’m not closing the door”
The France international departed the Red Devils on loan after he fell down the pecking order in attack at Old Trafford, and was looking for opportunities elsewhere that would guarantee him some first-team football and loads of minutes on the pitch.
Although his loan spell at Sevilla expires in the summer, Monchi revealed that he was not closing the door on Martial continuing his career in La Liga and said that there would be discussions with the player at the end of the season.
“I’m not closing the door on his continuity although there’s a lot to see and discuss with the player at the end of the season.”
With United re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo last summer, Martial’s place in attack for the team was put under threat. The former AS Monaco man fell behind Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, and Marcus Rashford in the waiting line for the starting striker role and warmed the bench for the first half of the season.
His move to Sevilla in January was expected to see him flourish and prove to everyone that he was still effective as a number nine, but unfortunately for the player, he has been plagued by injuries. To make things worse, the fans in Seville have not taken too kindly to his displays either.

Although he is expected to return to Manchester in the summer, it is not known whether he will choose to continue with the Red Devils next season. After all, there seems to be no place for him in the team at the moment.
However, Monchi’s comments seem to suggest that perhaps, the striker could be afforded an opportunity to continue his career in Spain, if he manages to impress them in the remaining weeks of the season. If not, a new manager is expected at the Theatre of Dreams next term, and perhaps Martial may look to force his way into the new boss’ plans.
