Erik ten Hag asks Manchester United to sign AS Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni this summer

According to ESPN, Erik ten Hag wants Manchester United to sign AS Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni in the summer transfer window. The former is expected to take over the managerial role at Old Trafford at the end of the current season.

Ten Hag has presented Tchouameni as an option to Man United to bolster the midfield this summer. The defensive midfielder is one of the highly-rated prospects in world football, having become a star for club and country in a short period. That has seen him become a transfer target for Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, with the former having held talks with his agent as well.

Monaco would be willing to listen to offers from other clubs for the Frenchman’s signature. However, they have set an asking price of between €60million and €70million. Whether the Red Devils would pay heed to Ten Hag’s demands and put in a transfer bid or not remains to be seen.

Tchouameni- must sign for Man Utd?

It is understandable why the Ajax boss has asked for the 22-year-old’s services once he takes over the coaching job this summer. After all, our midfield is in a bit of a mess, and it is quite normal that coaches would want players that can fit their system.

In the case of the 52-year-old manager, perhaps it is Tchouameni’s age profile and qualities on and off the ball that has caught his eye. It makes even more sense why Ten Hag has made that demand, looking at our current squad composition.

Paul Pogba will leave the Manchester club when he becomes a free agent after this term. Replacing Pogba in and of itself would be a challenging task indeed. At the same time, we also need options to replace Nemanja Matic, who is getting closer to the end of his playing career.

Even Scott McTominay and Fred aren’t completely perfect, with the duo often failing to perform well on a consistent basis. They are also two players that can arguably be upgraded upon. Hence, bringing in versatile options like Tchouameni can be helpful as Ten Hag can utilise him in the way he wants, depending upon the situation.

Tchouameni’s valuation also seems reasonable for someone who has earned quite a name for himself at a young age. He can repay that amount with his performances, but only time will tell whether we can sign him or not in the first place.

It remains to be seen if we can beat the competition and convince the 22-year-old midfielder, who has 8 caps for France already, to join our project. It would certainly be a tougher task to do that if we fail to make the UEFA Champions League for next season.

And there is also no guarantee that we can finish top four next season too. But whether that can be a deciding factor in the race to sign the ex-Girondins de Bordeaux star remains to be seen.
