Transfer News: Journalist Dean Jones suggests Manchester United loanee James Garner wouldn’t want summer return unless guaranteed minutes
In a transfer news discussion with Footballleagueworld, Dean Jones suggested that Manchester United loanee James Garner would fancy more game time than warming the bench at United.
Since joining Nottingham Forest in August 2021, James Garner has developed himself into a reliable player in the squad. The youngster has shown game awareness, intelligence, and exceptional passing skills, operating from the defensive midfield position.
Apart from his ability to read the game and intercept the opponent’s attacks, James Garner has also taken part in attacking transitions. His four goals and seven assists in 39 matches across all competitions reflect his delivering and scoring skills.
Even though the Englishman is scheduled to return to Manchester United in May next year, the youngster’s priorities might have changed lately. In an interview with Footballleagueworld, transfer guru Dean Jones reflected that the Englishman would intend to continue his productive spell at Forest rather than going back to United.
“Garner’s having a great time this season, and he doesn’t want to be on the fringes anywhere else at the moment. He’s shown his value, and he wants to kick on next season and be a big part of a team, wherever that is. Who knows, it could yet be Forest.”
In this campaign, Scott McTominay and Fred have stepped up. Considering their consistency and influencing spells, they have earned cemented spots under manager Ralf Rangnick. If they continue such skilful performances, it is improbable that the manager would change his pecking order.
Garner would surely struggle for regular gametime, especially as much as he gets in the Championship. But that being said, he would know the difference in demands and quality between the two teams.

Manchester United should eye a significant transfer fee as the youngster has become a crucial part of the Forest team- should they decide to offload him permanently. But that seems like a bad call given Paul Pogba’s imminent summer exit and Nemanja Matic’s ageing legs.
Regarding replacements, United should look for youth and academy players. Anthony Elanga’s burst onto the scene suggests that there is a big pool of talent inside the club’s lower division teams. Garner is one of such players and there is a chance he can enjoy a significant role in our set up next term.
