Transfer News: Manchester United in pole position to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic (Subscription Required), Manchester United are in the pole position to secure the services of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in the summer transfer window. The striker is in hot form this season, and he has continued that with another fine display, having scored a hattrick against Belenenses this Saturday.
Nunez is set to become one of Europe’s most sought after transfer dealings at the end of this campaign. After all, the Portuguese side are open to selling him after this term for a fee of around €70million. They want to finalise a move as early as possible to find a suitable replacement this summer.
Man United are interested in the Uruguay international, and they are leaders in this transfer race as of now. However, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also the frontrunners in the pursuit to sign him after this season. Several other top European clubs are in the mix as well, although they trail these three for now.
Man Utd must take advantage!
The need for badly in the attacking department, which raises the need for reinforcements in the summer. The 22-year-old would be a great choice in such a case, and this news would give us a sigh of relief as the board have realised the problem at hand.
Edinson Cavani is set to become a free agent after this season, and he should leave Old Trafford this summer. Marcus Rashford has endured a disappointing campaign so far, while Anthony Martial’s future past his loan spell at Sevilla is in uncertain waters.
Even Cristiano Ronaldo has been poor in several phases this term which indicates why we need to bring in a striker. Nunez would undoubtedly be a great prospect as he has been tearing it up in the Portugal Primeira Liga. The attacker has done the same in the Champions League as well, indicating how he is ready to take the next step.
What’s more, Nunez seems to possess the same Uruguayan blood as Cavani, which would be a great prospect for us. The latter enjoyed an excellent first campaign at Carrington, but his second season has been plagued by injuries. But what made him a fan favourite was his work rate coupled with his attacking prowess.

If that is the case, then Nunez seems to be a perfect fit as he is much younger, and there are no worries of injury issues either. As such, we must get this deal done at the earliest by taking advantage of our lead. It would not be easy, with the Blues and PSG being on the same boat as us.
The Ligue 1 side’s interest depends on Kylian Mbappe’s future, while Thomas Tuchel’s side are going through the sale process. We are also busy with the managerial search but finding a solution at the earliest could hand us further boosts. After all, we would be able to make an early approach over our rivals in such a case. Whether that will happen or not remains to be seen.
