Ralf Rangnick left amazed to know Manchester United had no scouting reports on RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku
According to ESPN’s Mark Ogden, via the Stretford Paddock YouTube channel (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick was left amazed when the club informed him that they did not have any scouting reports on RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku.
Nkunku has been of Leipzig’s best performing forwards this season, proving to be a regular source of goals and assists for the club since making the move from Paris-Saint Germain in 2019 as an exciting youngster.
At a time when United have been struggling to add more goals to their tally and failing to find consistency up front, the Frenchman has been eyed as a potential target in the upcoming summer transfer window.
This lack of a goal outlet in the attack has affected the English side’s position in the Premier League table as well, seeing the club sit seventh at the moment, six points away from the highly contested fourth place that Tottenham Hotspur occupy.
Not on their shortlist
Rangnick took over at Old Trafford late last year on an interim basis until the summer, overseeing the January transfer window without making any signings. When enquiring about what transfer plans the club had for the near future, the German is said to have been left startled when scouts informed him that Nkunku was not on their list of potential targets.
Despite the excellent season he was having in the Bundesliga this term, the Red Devils did not have the 24-year-old midfielder as an active transfer option they were monitoring, preferring to look elsewhere for their recruitment in the future.
The forward has gone from strength to strength since moving to Germany, with the player now becoming a France international as well, with Didier Deschamps handing him his senior debut last month.
With the FIFA World Cup due to be held later this year, this will come as a significant boost in Nkunku’s career thus far. With all due respect to the German club, they aren’t of the stature of a club such as Man United- which could provide a player like Nkunku the ideal place to take his career to the next level.

With Rangnick’s connections at Leipzig during his tenure as manager in the past, there is always a possibility that our interim boss has a line of communication with his former Bundesliga club. Whether that plays in our favour this summer remains to be seen.
Nkunku may not have been on the Manchester side’s list of targets when Rangnick took over, but it is hard to ignore the forward at the moment given his recent rise to stardom. It remains to be seen whether we actively take any steps to add him to our ranks next season.
