Speaking to the club’s official website, midfielder Bruno Fernandes has reacted to signing a new contract at Manchester United, which keeps him at the club until 2026, with the option to extend by a further year.

The former Sporting CP skipper joined United in the January transfer window in 2020 and made an instant impact, taking a side that was struggling to pick up wins and helping them finish in the top four within months of his arrival.

His impact and brilliant performances for his new team have seen him be rewarded with a new deal, and Fernandes said that he felt proud of the fact that the club came to him about a new contract rather than him going to the club.

“One of the points I wanted to make was the club coming to me, and not me going to the club, and it’s something that makes me proud, makes me feel I’m doing the right things. The club think I deserve something new, they think that what they proposed to me in the beginning is not at the same level.”

Despite not even finishing two full seasons at Old Trafford, the Portugal international has been given a new deal. Such is the club’s faith in the 27-year-old, who has arguably been our best player by miles since he joined the club.

“I will stay”

The ex-Sporting star was last seen scoring a brace for his country in the international break, with his goals helping Portugal qualify for the World Cup in Qatar later this year. Having now returned to his club, the player’s first action back in Manchester was to sign his new deal with the English side.

Fernandes said that his focus was now on helping the club win trophies and build a successful team, getting back to the standards it used to hold. Although the midfielder agreed it would not happen next season, he predicted that progress will occur step by step.

“Obviously, now I’ve signed a new contract, I will stay, and I want to understand what the club wants. The club wants to win, the club wants to build something. From what they have told me, I believe that the club will be back to its standards. Probably not next season at the standard that we want, but I think step by step, I think that the club will be back in the glorious days.”

The player has featured heavily for Man United since his debut, hardly missing any games and turning up for every fixture, across multiple competitions. He has been the first-choice attacking midfielder for both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick throughout their tenures as the manager.

Despite having players like Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard in the side who can operate in the role, Fernandes has kept these stars out of the team with his performances for the first team. In his absence, Paul Pogba has taken up the No. 10 role at times, but there is hardly ever a gameweek where the Portuguese player is unavailable.

Despite not winning any trophies at Old Trafford yet, it is encouraging to see the midfielder talk about committing to the club’s vision of winning trophies in the future. There is no chance to win any silverware this season, having crashed out of the Champions League right before the international break began.

A new manager is expected to come in this summer, and there is no doubt that Fernandes will continue to be the team’s driving force in attack. Whoever the next boss may be, they will consider themselves lucky to have the Portugal international to rely on for the near future, given the new deal the player signed recently.
