Manchester United suffer a blow in the managerial hunt after being rejected by Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann
According to Miguel Delaney‘s newsletter by The Independent (h/t Express), Manchester United have suffered a blow in their hunt for a new permanent manager as Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, one of the candidates for the job, has rejected their approach for him.
One of the youngest head coaches in Europe, the German has been impressive in the Bundesliga, managing teams such as Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig before he landed the Bayern gig at the beginning of the current season.
Thus far, Nagelsmann is on course to lead his new side to a league title in the next few weeks, with Bayern sitting pretty at the top of the league table. They are also through to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League, and the German giants will be aiming to win the competition by the summer.
United, meanwhile, are searching for a new permanent manager to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who the club sacked late last year following a poor string of results that saw the Red Devils pushed down the Premier League table.
Not interested in England swap
Nagelsmann’s impressive work in Germany had made him a candidate for the managerial job at Old Trafford in the summer, but the 34-year-old is said to have made it clear that he was not interested in swapping Germany for England.
The Manchester side were already investigating whether he would be available at the end of the season through their back channels, but have been informed in no uncertain terms that ‘the answer is no‘ from the incumbent Bayern boss.
Man United are currently led by Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis, with the German given the manager job until the summer. He has been tasked with picking up the ropes from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and guiding the club to a top-four finish by the end of the season in order to play Champions League football next season.
It is easy to see why Nagelsmann rejected the approach from the Red Devils, given that he is already in charge of a European giant at Bayern. Furthermore, he was only appointed as their head coach last summer, and he is yet to finish a full season with the Bavarians.

Not just this, the Bundesliga club are well established and well run, regularly winning the league and cup competitions, while consistently running deep in the Champions League. The possibility of winning trophies is much higher at Bayern than at United, and that is sure to attract Nagelsmann more than anything else.
Having received a no from the German coach, it is time for the Theatre of Dreams to expect another new face to walk in through the doors and take charge of the club. The situation leaves Ajax’s Erik ten Hag and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino as the standout contenders for the United job ahead of the new campaign, and we cannot possibly complain about those options.
