Transfer News: Manchester United enter the race to sign Djed Spence amidst Arsenal interest
According to The Mirror, Manchester United have entered the race to secure the signature of Middlesbrough prospect Djed Spence amidst interest from Arsenal for a potential transfer. He is one of the highly-rated talents in the Championship at this moment and has attracted a lot of attention from elsewhere due to his excellent performances.
Spence is currently out on loan at Nottingham Forest, and he has recently made his England U21 debut against Albania on Tuesday. He expressed after the game that he plans to move to the Premier League in the future, which would be a boost for Man United should they decide to actively pursue him.
However, the Red Devils will need to deal with some heavy competition as they are joined by the Gunners as well. Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich are also in the transfer race, with the latter having scouted the 21-year-old regularly. He could potentially be subjected to a bidding war if all the interested parties actively vie for his services after this season.
Who is Djed Spence?
Primarily a right-back, the Englishman has mostly been used as a right-sided midfielder this season. A highly energetic prospect, the fullback has always expressed the desire to give everything on the pitch when he has been given chances.
The Championship ace likes to often bomb forward and use his excellent dribbling skills to beat opponents and fire off shots on goal. However, he has shown enough composure not to get caught out of position and has an innate knack to stop opposition attacks with his strong defensive attributes.
The Boro loanee has three goals and five assists to his name this season from 37 appearances across all competitions. He also seems ready to jump up to the English first division, considering his displays in the FA Cup. His performances against Leicester City and Mikel Arteta’s side helped Forest knock them out of the cup competition.
We need to sign a right-back, looking at how Aaron Wan-Bissaka has fared poorly in the attacking department. Modern football demands more from the fullback, and we must adapt to those requirements. Spence would be a great signing in such a case as he can be used as a backup for Diogo Dalot.

Spence can even compete for the starting spot in due time if he continues to develop on this trajectory. That being said, we must be wary of the competition as both North London clubs are looking to make a £20million move for the defender in the summer transfer window.
Bayern Munchen would also be a major obstacle, considering how they are constantly keeping tabs on Spence currently. It remains to be seen if Middlesbrough would sell him this summer or not, having tied him down at the club until 2024. We should push for a move if they are willing to do as we need fresh blood who would bring the drive to win silverware in our attempt to regain lost glory.
