Manchester United on high alert as Benfica are willing to sell star striker Darwin Nunez
According to the Portuguese outlet O Jogo [print edition], (h/t The Sun), Benfica are willing to sell their budding talent and Manchester United target Darwin Nunez for a fee in the region of £68million despite the fact that the Uruguayan forward has a release clause of £127million in his current contract.
20 percent of the profit from any sale will be given to his former club Almeira. Nunez has quickly become one of the hottest properties in Europe after his exploits with the Portuguese club. The 22-year-old has already bagged 26 goals and notched up two assists in 33 matches across all competitions for Os Encarnados this season.
His performances have not only earned him a lot of plaudits but also seen a list of suitors line up for his services. Arsenal, Newcastle, West Ham, and Tottenham Hotspur are the other Premier League clubs that have been linked with the Uruguayan striker so far.
Nunez, an expensive purchase
The Red Devils are in dire need of a young dynamic striker who could change the fortunes of the club. With uncertainty looming around the long-term future of Edinson Cavani and the consistently underwhelming performances of Anthony Martial, one could be forced to rely heavily on the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Whilst the former Real Madrid striker has shown that he can still deliver on the big stages at 37, one cannot help but wonder how long can the Mancunian club solely rely on him considering the hectic schedule that modern footballers are subjected to.
Nunez could thus be a great acquisition and his ability to cut across the lines and put the ball in the back of the net is something that the Old Trafford outfit has been missing for some time now. At 22, the Uruguayan still has some of his best footballing years ahead of him and could potentially develop into a phenomenal striker on the biggest stage if things fall in place.
While the picture looks all rosy, the huge fee being slapped on the youngster coupled with the interest from other top clubs could put us in a difficult position should we be genuinely interested in securing his services.

Man Utd in the past have spent huge sums of money on attackers with little to no dividends at all. The club must beware of this and should assess the different criteria of whether or not Darwin Nunez fits in their long-term plans before breaking the bank to lure him to Old Trafford.
