Manchester United are the frontrunners to sign Napoli star Victor Osimhen

According to the Italian news outlet Tuttosport [Print Edition] (h/t ChronicleLive), Manchester United are currently leading the race to sign Napoli star Victor Osimhen amidst interest from Newcastle United ahead of the summer transfer window. He has led his team from the front this season as they challenge to win the Serie A title that has eluded them for so long.

Osimhen raised eyebrows across the world when the Italian side bought him from Lille for £46million in 2020 when he still had some ways to go before becoming a dependable goalscorer. However, the gamble seems to have paid off looking at his growth since.

Man United and Newcastle are battling it out with each other for the Nigerian, but it is the former who are in pole position at this instant. The latter is believed to be in the market for a striker despite signing Chris Wood from Burnley in the January transfer window. Wood’s lack of goals alongside Callum Wilson’s injury troubles is stated to have prompted them to go down this route.

Should Man Utd target Osimhen?

The 23-year-old has been terrific for Napoli this season, helping them to second place in the Serie A standings. They are currently in contention to win the title and his output would undoubtedly help in that regard. With 15 goals and four assists to his name from 25 matches across all competitions, he has impressed when available to take the field.

The Serie A forward would probably be expensive, though, as he has evolved into a better player in the last couple of years. The Red Devils hierarchy should assess their budget and see if they are capable of potentially spending a large amount for the attacker while bolstering other areas like midfield, for example.

After all, we are the favourites to secure the African striker’s signature, and we should take advantage of this situation and finalise a move as early as possible. The Magpies cannot be taken lightly either, as they have showcased back in January that they are not afraid of splashing the cash.

As such, we should still be on our toes despite our current lead so that we would not get pipped by the Toons in the future. Osimhen could prove to be a kind of necessity for us considering the potential need for a forward addition at the end of the current campaign.

Edinson Cavani is out of contract this summer transfer window, while Cristiano Ronaldo is not at the peak of his powers. Marcus Rashford has struggled throughout this term, while Anthony Martial could be moved out after all since he has been poor at Sevilla as well. Mason Greenwood is indefinitely suspended, so there arises a need for a centre-forward addition this summer. Whether Osimhen will be one to come or not would only be known in due time.
