Fabrizio Romano reveals Manchester United interview with Ajax Amsterdam manager Erik ten Hag

As relayed by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United have interviewed Ajax Amsterdam boss Erik ten Hag regarding the vacant permanent manager job at Old Trafford next season.

The Red Devils are currently led by Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis until the end of the campaign, tasked with guiding the club to a top-four spot and ensuring that they qualify for the Champions League next term.

The German is expected to give up the manager’s hot seat in the summer for a new permanent boss ahead of the new season, and United have eyed ten Hag as one of the candidates for the job.

The Dutchman is in charge of Ajax at the moment, aiming to win a hat-trick of league titles with the side as they sit on top of the Eredivisie table during the business end of the campaign, two points clear of title contenders PSV Eindhoven.

Other candidates to be interviewed

Romano relayed claims that a meeting between United and ten Hag took place this week, as the club accelerates its managerial hunt in order to wrap up things ahead of the 2022/23 season. The Manchester side’s board is also planning to interview other candidates for the job in due course.

However, with regards to the incumbent Ajax manager, the bosses at Old Trafford are said to be happy with his proficiency in English, although a final decision on the 52-year-old will take place after considering a number of other factors that the club have in mind.

During the meeting, ten Hag had enquired about the budget he would be allocated to sign new players as well as what the club had in mind regarding their plans for the future, to see if his vision aligns with that of the United hierarchy. The Dutchman is also said to be ready to take on a new experience in the Premier League after plying his trade in Holland.

ten Hag seems to have passed the first test to be given the job at the Theatre of Dreams, with the United hierarchy seemingly happy with him. He first rose to prominence in Europe with an excellent run in the 2018/19 Champions League season, guiding a young Ajax side filled with future superstars to the semi-finals of the competition, where they were eventually beaten by Tottenham Hotspur.

Clearly, trophies and a penchant for promoting youth come with hiring the Dutchman, and we can hope that by the summer, we see ten Hag appointed as our new permanent manager to usher in a new era at Old Trafford.
