Ajax Amsterdam boss Erik ten Hag favourite to become new Manchester United manager in the summer
According to The Sun, Ajax Amsterdam boss Erik ten Hag is now the favourite to become the new Manchester United manager at the end of the season after a set of dossiers was completed on all potential candidates for the job.
United are currently led by Ralf Rangnick, who the club stole away from Lokomotiv Moscow late last year to take charge of the side on an interim basis until the end of the season and guide them to a top four spot in order to finish strongly.
He replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager, with the Norwegian sacked by the Red Devils after failing to win a trophy during his tenure and some poor results in his final season, seeing the club fall down multiple places in the Premier League table.
Rangnick will give up the manager’s hot seat in the summer when his tenure expires but will be involved with the club’s recruitment process of their new permanent boss ahead of the new season. It now remains to be seen who his potential replacement can be.
Long-term planning
Thus far, it was ten Hag and Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino that were contesting neck-and-neck for the United job next term, but after compiling exhaustive background checks on each of their potential candidates, the Dutchman is said to lead the race.
The Old Trafford side is looking for someone who can last long at the club as well as take the club back to the glory days and bring much success. After spending weeks putting together their dossiers, it is now claimed that they believe the current Ajax boss is well suited for the position.
The 2021/22 season sees us end the campaign with no trophies, taking our winless streak to five years now. Last week’s Champions League exit to the hands of Atletico Madrid all but confirmed that Rangnick is set to end his debut season at the club without winning any silverware.
ten Hag and Ajax, meanwhile, are on course to win a hat-trick of league titles with the Dutch giants sitting on top of the Eredivisie table at the moment. The 52-year-old has worked wonders in Holland with the side, despite losing key players last summer.
