Newcastle United planning to rival Manchester United in race to sign Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips
According to Daily Mail Online, Newcastle United are planning to rival Manchester United in the race to sign Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips in the summer transfer window. The midfielder has not featured for his side since the long-term hamstring injury he had suffered back in December.
Phillips is set to depart Elland Road at the end of this season, with several Premier League clubs vying to secure his services. Aston Villa and Liverpool are also monitoring the situation, alongside Newcastle and Man United. He is open to assessing his future options next summer, paving the way for a potential exit with a big-money transfer.
After all, bids of around £55million from West Ham United were rejected in January as Leeds were keen to keep hold of the Englishman to help with their PL survival. The Toons are wary of the competitions as they plot their way to get their hands on the defensive midfielder next summer.
More complications
The 26-year-old rose to the top in the English top-flight over the past two years or so, enabling him to break into the national team under Gareth Southgate and quickly became a fan favourite in the process. His performances in the Euro 2020 was impressive, to say the least, plus his current absence has played a part in the Whites’ recent struggles.
Signing the Premier League superstar would be a major coup on our part, considering our rivalry with his team. Moreover, he is also a childhood fan of his current club, indicating the challenges that we have to face, unlike perhaps the other interested parties.
However, it is stated that our priorities lie elsewhere at this instant. While it isn’t mentioned which positions or players we could be looking at, perhaps signing a central defender and a young centre-forward this summer would make sense.
But one cannot ignore the lack of depth in Man United’s central midfield if Paul Pogba leaves in the future. Donny van de Beek’s future arguably remains uncertain as he was loaned to Everton in January. But since Jurgen Klopp’s side and the Lions are also in the mix, it will be an interesting couple of months ahead of the summer transfer window.
Nemanja Matic is also ageing and a pair of fresh legs, especially those of Phillips, would certainly be a welcome addition. The role he played for England alongside Declan Rice last summer would certainly not be forgotten by Three Lions fans for a long time.

And our fans would certainly dream of such a partnership at Old Trafford. But with heavy hitters like the Toons entering the fray, along with Leeds’ cut-throat rivalry with the Red Devils, signing the English midfielder would certainly not be an easy task at all.
