Transfer News: Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo ready to team up with Lionel Messi at Paris Saint-Germain

According to FootballTransfers (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo is keen on linking up with Lionel Messi at Paris Saint-Germain if he departs England in the summer.

Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford at the beginning of the current season for a second spell at the club, having played for Real Madrid and Juventus after he left United in 2009. The player has been hugely successful in Spain and Italy, and made a homecoming to Manchester last year in the summer.

However, his second stint at the Theatre of Dreams has not gone according to plan so far, with United knocked out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup already, and miles away from winning the Premier League this campaign.

The first half of Ronaldo’s return to United was a hit, with the player being the standout player as he singlehandedly got the club into the knockout stages of the Champions League and regularly found the back of the net in the Premier League.

PSG an attractive option

However, 2022 has not been kind on the Portugal skipper, with the forward looking low on confidence and out of form – a sight that is rare to see. Having turned 37 this year, we may perhaps be seeing the last of the superstar as he enters the twilight years of his playing career.

It is said that the lack of serious opportunities to win trophies at United coupled with the prospect of missing out on the Champions League next season would compel Ronaldo to depart Manchester in the summer and seek a move to PSG, which is an attractive option for the Ballon d’Or winner.

Having only just moved back to Manchester the previous summer, it would certainly be a shock to see Ronaldo exit the club after a single season in the Premier League. Admittedly, things have not gone smoothly for both club and player, with silverware missing this campaign.

However, the harsh truth is that United are in no position to compete for multiple trophies in the coming season, with the club far behind other favourites in the league. Last weekend’s 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City highlighted exactly that.

If news about Ronaldo leaving the club if we miss out on UCL football next season is true, then alarm bells will need to be rung and quick action taken, given we are in danger of not finishing in the top four of the league this season. While Ronaldo and Messi linking up would be a fantasy of many football fans around the world, it shouldn’t come at our expense.

Currently in fifth place, although we are only one point behind Arsenal, the Gunners have a whopping 3 games in hand to increase the gap if they win their remaining matches. For now, the club will be focused on closing down this gap and starting a winning streak to ensure that they secure that fourth spot by the summer.
